Copied from email exchanges with Simone:

First it the link to the Terminology portal from MS: https://www.microsoft.com/Language/en-US/Default.aspx \https://www.microsoft.com/Language/en-US/Search.aspx

Then, possible approach to translate using the multilingual toolkit:

  • We could indeed have a separate repo with translations for Backend
  • It could contain file in XLIFF format that people can edit either directly or using the app from MS (or some other free translation tools that support XLIFF)
  • A build process could be triggered whenever there is a commit to the repo to create the XML files used by the backend and update the ones in the config file
  • Also, since the XLIFF files is a bilingual format which contains both source (English) and target, it would be a good idea to keep the files in the config folder as the master version, and any time a label as added to the English the “translatable” files must be updated (via a script).

Also, new languages could be added by trying and see via the Terminology Service APIs which terms are already translated by Microsoft applications and reuse them.

I guess what could be done is:

  • Compare the various translations and see how many labels are missing for each language
  • Combine the English and localised versions into one xliff file per language
  • Create script/cli tool to convert xliff file from the language config file and back
  • Integrate the automated translation using MS terminology portal (either via API or using the downloadable terminology base)
