Possibly use Cloud9 editor as replacement for Codemirror.
There is a much newer version of CodeMirror (v2.3, currently) that has several key improvements over the one currently shipping with Umbraco (which is v0.94, I think?) that would be a marked improvement if upgraded.
Here's one relevant thread that might help if choosing to stay with CodeMirror: http://our.umbraco.org/forum/using/ui-questions/15323-Template-Code-Editor-reformatting-tabs-to-2-spaces-how-do-I-stop-this
Just took a look at Cloud9 and does seem like its editor has some really cool features, but I wonder if anyone who is really looking for such advanced features wouldn't already be using VS or WebMatrix? Many of Cloud9's features seem like they would need to be turned off for use inside the umbraco backend.
It also appears that Cloud9 requires node.js on the server, so this would be an added dependency and is something I believe requires a server administrator to install, so might have a problem at certain ISPs if they were not willing to install/configure this for you.
Just my two cents!
We're trying to update to the Cloud9 version to improve support in IE, plus the editor is it is more widely used and supported/maintained by mozilla, cloud9 and github.
I have not seen any dependencies on node.js, correct me if I'm wrong.
