It appears that, after a Google update, the Tiny MCE spellchecker no longer works.
See http://our.umbraco.org/forum/ourumb-dev-forum/bugs/39826-Spell-check-error
The Google spellchecker service this relies on (https://www.google.com/tbproxy/spell) may have been turned off for good - http://0-productforums.google.com.library.ccbcmd.edu/forum/#!topic/chat/CPb0PYllbE8 An alternative is the HunSpellChecker plugin http://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/hunspellchecker
The HunSpellChecker does not work in Umbraco V6 - this is quite an important feauture of the RTE, a lot of clients rely on it. Is there any plans to integrate a new spell check in future versions?
I've just uploaded version 0.6.0 of the HunSpellChecker which I've tested as compatible with Umbraco V6.1.3 (probably works with V6.* but untested in other versions)
There's a discussion http://www.tinymce.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=106437 about using a different Google api (again undocumented). I've submitted a pull request with the api change https://github.com/umbraco/Umbraco-CMS/pull/114
