Since you can drag and drop the order it doesn't make sense to show the number...
I disagree. It's common practise to create base doc types with tabs for things like SEO, Advanced and Site Settings and setting the tab sort order to 80,90,100 etc. This allows you to ensure these always appear on the end of any child doc types. In addition, on these child doc types, we need to retain the ability to say "insert this tab between seo and svanced" by setting the sort order to say 81.
+1 to Matt's comments, we do the same on virtually all of our sites.
