U4-360 - Cleanup the supplied starterkits/skins

Created by Sebastiaan Janssen 19 Aug 2012, 14:51:28 Updated by Shannon Deminick 21 Jun 2017, 07:52:13

This issue is related to the following post:

To recreate:

  1. Install 4.6.1
  2. Select a Starter Kit (e.g. Business Starter Kit)
  3. Select a Skin (UMedia, Designit_Green, Friendly Ghost)
  4. Change the CSS/Templates manually

After 4) in most cases, the whole skinning system will start to break down:

  1. Pressing the TinyMCE toolbar button related to Skinning will cause an error.
  2. Accidentaly selecting a new skin will change and mess up your templates completely

In my opinion either the imlementation of the skinning system is broken and it should become either possible to disable it completely or it should be "more tidy" and more separated from the rest of the CMS system.

Also, the skins supplied with the starter kits are messy:

  1. Designit Green has some images in the folder \CSS\ that are used for the layout while the Umedia one has images in \Images\ ...
  2. Switching from Umedia to Designit Green changes your templates ...

I think it is important that the standard skins become more unified such that a novice user that starts from modifying the starter-kit doesn't inadvertently destroy his or her website....

Finally it would be nice to remove the "change skin" or "choose a starterkit" panel from the developer section...
