U4-3639 - Editing content name is not intuitive

Created by Ove Andersen 21 Nov 2013, 16:15:45 Updated by Shannon Deminick 21 Jun 2017, 07:58:45

It's not immediately clear that "Feature" in the attached image [file:content name.JPG] can be edited. It should be an icon or a white background indicating that this field is editable. Right now it looks like a label.

I agree.

I just spent ages trying to figure out how to edit the page name. Unfortunately it looks like I'm not the only one. Text that switches to editable mode (or appears to in this case) when you interact with it typically saves asynchronously when it loses focus. But in this case you have to hit the Save button... which is located right at the opposite end of the page. And as OP pointed out, there's nothing to indicate that it's editable data - apart from a faint underline if you happen to mouse over it. Very confusing. I'd prefer to see this field added back to the Properties tab where it was previously.

Thank you, glad I'm not the only one. I gave this feedback on the UX group prior to release but got no response. I find that it's initially not obvious that it's a input field that can be edited and when you miss it when creating a document the validation is not obvious either. It should have a border with white background like all other editable fields, there's zero reason why this one (very important) field should be different than all the rest. Technically I also find it very difficult to edit after the fact. If you make a typo, try to select that one letter with the mouse and update it. The only consistent way to do this is to put the cursor in the field, move the mouse away and then use arrow keys to fix the character. Trying to use the mouse always results in the text being completely highlighted and replaced.

All users I've introduced to U7 by now have asked the same question: "How do I rename an item". It just has to get a background or border indicating that it's an editable field. It's just a matter of learning it once, but it's quite annoying to have to answer over and over.
