U4-4172 - Change password in users section not working (u7.0.3)

When I try to change the password in the User section, the message "Could not change password, invalid username or password" shows up. When using Reset password option, the auto generated password works.

Same here. Just made a clean install. Fist thing I do after installing and logging into Umbraco, is to try and change the admin password. I get the same message and can use reset password.

Clean installation. Umbraco 7.0.3. Cannot set user passwords in the admin control panel. Get an error message "Error saving user (check log)".

Log file contains the following message:

Same issue here too. Cannot change users password in control panel. Error message is "Could not change password, invalid username or password". Clean installation of 7.0.3.

I have tested this in 7.0.2 as well. I don't seem to be able to reproduce it in 7.0.2 In 7.0.3 however I get the same issue.

I'm experiencing the same thing and tried 7.0.2 which has the same problem. I can't check the reset button either... It also doesn't seem to be firing of an email when you create a user.

I agree. Please can we have this in a hotfix? Being such fundamental functionality, this is embarrassing giving this to clients.

I just noticed that I couldn't save a new user either. It is the third user that I am creating. So, I have successfully created 2 users but the third is not being created. If you could keep an eye out for this while fixing this bug, it is probably closely related.

Are you getting any errors on that, sometimes the red bar will display saying it can't save and to check your log - for example if you don't assign a section to the user. Seems pretty strange you can create 2 and not a 3rd.

I didn't get a red bar and so I just checked the log and found no record of an attempt to create the user. I think I actually created the user on the site before I upgraded. It was version 7.0.1 and is now 7.0.3.

i just realised i should check to see if I followed the version specific upgrade instructions. I found that I had not. Sorry, please disregard my problem. it is creating users perfectly.

Umbraco 7.0.4 is out now with a fix for just this issue. So it's exactly the same as 7.0.3 but with this issue fixed:

I just downloaded a fresh copy of 7.0.4 started it with Web Matrix and an embedded database. I still get exactly the same errors....

@Shandem - would you be able to try creating a member with just content and media access, and see if they can edit a page (not just log-in but actually edit a content page)?

I'm not sure if this is as a result of the 7.0.4 fix or whether it was happening before (as I couldn't create member log-ins before), or perhaps the members haven't been set up correctly, but I have a client who's just reported that their members aren't able to edit any content pages unless they have access to the developer section. Odd, but I tried it and seems correct. If I create a member with access to only 'content' and 'media' sections, they can log-in but on trying to edit a content page they're redirected back to the log-in screen. If I grant access to the developer section for this member they can edit content no problem. Very weird.

The only packages installed in this site are Archetype and ezSearch.

I've just tested that on a clean install of 7.0.4. Created a new user with access only to content and media. Logged in as that user and they can edit content / media without problem. Check your log file maybe?

I download a fresh install of 7.0.4 and go through the install. I then create another user which works fine. Still logged in as the admin, I try to perform functions on the newly created user. I try to reset the password, disable the user etc. All these options give me an error and advises me to check the log. The logs however don't seem to log any problem.

Robert, that will happen if you don't check a section to assign them to, ensure you assign them to content/media/etc... If you don't select one i think it shows a message but it's not colored atm.

I have successfully upgraded from 7.0.3 to 7.0.4 and after the upgrade I could change the password of the admin user.

@Shandem Robert, Related to the colored message: http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-3851 (so should be fixed in 7.1.0 I think) Also I did a fresh 7.0.4 install and I did not encounter the change password issue anymore. Thanks Shannon!

Thanks for checking the above @Shandem - seems like it's a bug with the Archetype data-type rather than Umbraco core (e.g. http://our.umbraco.org/forum/umbraco-7/developing-umbraco-7-packages/48530-Archetype-and-User-permissions-in-Umbraco). I'll raise an issue on their tracker.

I am using 7.1.4 and am also unable to change my password. If I use the change password option, the new password is simply not recognised. If I use the reset option, the generated password is also not recognised. I even tried logging on with IE, so as to avoid Chrome caching but same result. my password is still the same one I used when setting up the site. I am not happy about going live with this password!

@AmandaInEly I cannot replicate this, in your chrome console window are you seeing javascript errors? Have you had any luck with this since you logged this msg?
