Pretty meaningless if you don't know what they are. Also with the new drag and drop functionality it might be a more pro feature, is a text box the right input for this?
I agree on the missing label - But think the textbox is fine since I like to control the sorting order without any restrictions. However it might have a type of "number" instead with start/end values perhaps?
Agree that there needs to be a way to set it, nice that you can set it to a really high number to affect sorting in nested doctypes too although it tries to over rule this sometimes with its auto sorting if you drag and drop.
Keeping the number is important esp. now as content type compositions are being introduced, because you may want to order tabs accross content types (using big numbers as Pete says). And we should have the same things for properties too. OTOH I think it should not be enabled by default... should be something you "unlock" with an "expert" config setting. What do you think?
related to compositions
Happy with an "expert" mode if required, in that case it would be better to simply hide the sort order box completely if expert mode is not enabled. That way just the drag and drop order is used for sort order. Query, if you enable "expert" mode does is disable drag and drop? As mentioned when you drag and drop I believe it renumbers everything (does it auto save too?) which could be a little dangerous/annoying if you've spent time manually setting your sort orders
There is the lock/unlock icon/feature for doctype alias in the backoffice now, wonder if that might be a nice thing to reuse for this?
