U4-4994 - Web Platform Installer performs SQL Server Express 2008 R2 install

Created by Peter Prokein 27 May 2014, 02:32:33 Updated by Peter Prokein 27 May 2014, 14:39:50

When running the webpi installer on Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012 R2 (probably on other OSes as well) the Umbraco 7 install includes the installation of SQL Server Express 2008 R2, Visual Web Developer 2012 Express, etc., all that can't be right.

Do you have SQL server installed on your machine?

Peter Prokein 27 May 2014, 08:42:19

Negative, it's a plain install, patched, with some IIS basics. It's asking to set a SQL Express sa password even before it gets to whether to use SQL CE or SQL Server. This is easily reproducible and not machine specific (tried on Windows Server 2008 R2, and Window Server 2012 R2 VMs).

I'm sorry, it's not possible for us to specify that when someone wants to use SQL CE that SQL Server should not be installed. I'll take your complaint to Microsoft's Web Application Gallery people but this is out of our hands.

For now I'd recommend you choose an alternative installation method (manual): http://our.umbraco.org/documentation/Installation/

But it makes no sense at all that the installer asks to set a SQL Server Express password prior to the user selecting whether SQL CE or a remote SQL server should be used.

Again, it's not something we can help with, Microsoft's system works like that. I've relayed your complaints.

Ugh, this is one of the worst cases of user error ever. I was convinced that the WebPi could be used to install U on a remote SQL server because I had done that before. It still can be done but the remote SQL has to be specified in the WebPi installer Options prior to installing the Umbraco package. See attached screen. Sorry for not getting to the bottom of this sooner.
