In the stock TinyMCE, when you enter an email address into the "Insert Link" dialog, it gives you a prompt to auto-add the mailto: prefix:
The URL you entered seems to be an email address. Do you want to add the required mailto: prefix?
For some reason this is removed in the Umbraco version - I think its leftover from a long time ago.

I've submitted a pull request with the fix from that post. We've tested this on one live site with no issues.
