U4-7450 - Message "Received an error from the server" has blank details and blank stacktrace

It seems in some circumstances the publishing errors reported by the back office are blank. It seems to happen with various different errors so this issue is about the display of error information rather than fixing the underlying error (which in my case can be caused by raising an exception in a publish event handler)

The right hand side error panel contains this text:

Received an error from the server
An error occurred

EXCEPTION DETAILS:

In the browser console I can see the call to /umbraco/backoffice/UmbracoApi/Content/PostSave returns 500 with content being the YSOD (html) for the exception. (should it be json?)
