I noticed in Umbraco version 7.4.0-nightly138 that when you hover on an image you saw and info icon and a checkmark icon.
In Umbraco version 7.4.0-nightly143 that has changed a bit, however I don't think it is clear that the editor can select images by clicking on them (before it just linked to the media type node). So when hover on an image, I think it would be great the indicate it can be selected by presenting the checkmark (maybe a black/grey version and with opacity until it is selected). It is not a must (and I know editors who are editing from a tablet or mobile device maybe don't see it), but it gives some additional feedback.
Furthermore you can actually drag the images (and by dragging an image a bit to the top, you will see the dropzone). It can be disabled, see this issue: http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-7572
It's by design that we didn't introduce a hover for selection. Instead we introduced a click to select cross the backoffice. I've added
draggable="false" so that images no longer are draggable in the media grid
It's in the commit here https://github.com/umbraco/Umbraco-CMS/commit/8cb9d6858e17091be6b0a2443ee47469ece8dd73
