Document Types can have a base Document Type, but this isn't possible in Media Types. I'm using Media Types more and more, but without a base Media Type it's harder to maintain.
Media and document types should really be merged, they are the same thing really then only difference that I can see is that by tradition media have a file upload datatype on them.
If they were merged then you would get the base type for free.
We could add a flag to a type to say which tree it applies to and split media and documents based on a root tree item.
This would then open up DocTyped data to more than just the two trees and allow package developers to be able to store there own data in the tree (but outside the content tree) and leverage the content editors without having to reinvent the editor UI every time also would be able to leverage the start node logic to protect parts of there data from being edited by the wrong users.
I've also thought this should be the case, too.
Would this mean we could define a starting tre be it media, content or something else we can define?
In the v6 API the only difference between a DocumentType and MediaType is the templates (DefaultTemplate and AllowedTemplates), so having a base type is supported through the API.
