U4-9413 - Make link to document a part of the header

Created by Niels Hartvig 19 Jan 2017, 10:02:31 Updated by seanhak 05 Apr 2017, 14:57:19

Subtask of: U4-9272

As a user I should be able to click a link in the header to browse the page I'm editing, so that I can always do so no matter what tab I'm on (rather than having to go to properties and scroll to the bottom). See attached concept illustration from Seb

Will this only show 1 URL? I've got a lot of the websites where a node has multiple URLs with the help of a UrlProvider.

@madsrasmussen PR: https://github.com/umbraco/Umbraco-CMS/pull/1713

We have tested and discussed this internally and came to the conclusion that an icon, like this in the header, is currently not the right solution to this problem. The icon is not self explaining and will therefore make no sense to inexperienced users. We also need to carefully pick the items we put in the header, too many items will result in a cluttered interface, and we know that a near future will bring functionality as languages and variations which we currently plan to put in the header.

To get closer to a solution for the problem we have set "link to document” as the first property on the properties tab which will make it faster to find.

I have tested the PR and it works as expected. I need help to do a sanity check of the code.

If it's the first property on the properties tab it's easier to find, but it's still hidden on the last tab. Maybe it should be available as a property editor so people can decide where to put it? I made a package which also does this: https://our.umbraco.org/projects/backoffice-extensions/url-preview/

@jbreuer your package is a great enhancement for those who'll need greater control over this. But we won't encourage general usage of property editors for non-editable data and as we'll see an overhaul of the back office later this year, we don't want to introduce larger interim solutions.

This is all good and has been tested & sanity checked the code changes made. Setting to fixed & merging in

@madsrasmussen How about a "preview link" and "link to document" in the context/action menu (right click a node).
