Under the default icon (and also when you've changed the icon) it would make the feature more obvious if there was a small text saying "change icon". See attach.

If you want to write "Change icon", It would be nice to simplify the looks by removing the white box.

But if you ask me then I personally think that it would become a little cluttered with a label. And I actually think it works better in the current state, especially because of the white box, the white box indicates that the content can be edited, simelar to the box around the DocumentType Name.

I have a few other solutions to consider that might fix the issue you are experiencing.

  • Add a hover(mouseover) effect, this will make it more clear that you can interact with it.
  • Give the default state(icon) a more "ghost" look(only in this edit mode, not for content editing), like dotted lines. This should look more like an outline, so the user get the feeling that they have to place something in this spot.
  • Make the icon black when something has been chosen, so its clear that a choice have been made. Again the hover effect should help indicate that it can be changed.
  • Eventually if you still think the label its needed, I would consider a solution where the label is only visible in a shorter period, or even better have a on boarding system that introduces functionality first time you get exposed to it.

I hope you'll find a good solution.

Remember that sometimes 'less is more'. If you start writing "change me here", "edit me", "click there". Then the user will start expecting these labels. Instead its better to introduce a reconcilable look for things that can be changed, and if needed then create visual hints that will nudge the user to explorer it. I would rather like to see it fading in a slow pulse than having labels on top. Please keep it simple. Thanks.
